■Location Hokkaido is the northernmost and second largest of Japan's islands, and Embetsu is located in the north of Hokkaido. It is located approximately at 44゚43'N latitude and at 141゚47'E longitude. ■Climate The average annual temperature is 6.5℃. The climate of summer is quiet. (mean maximum temperature is 20℃) In the winter time, Embetsu has deep snows and sometimes temperatures go down below minus 10℃. |

■Town Profile
■Geography Embetsu is about 591 square kilometers.The west side of town touches the Sea of Japan, and the east side is covered with mountains. The Enbetsu river flows through the center of town and the highest peak Pissiri (1032m) rises at the southernmost point. Moreover, Embetsu has a rich natural diversity and more than 80% is covered by forest. ■Population Embetsu's population is 3,067 (as of March, 2011). The main industry is agriculture and fishery. ■History Embetsu was founded facing in 1897 and became a township in1949, After many difficulties in the harsh climate of northern Hokkaido, we marked our 100th anniversary in 1997. |

■Agriculture Agriculture is thriving in Embetsu. This town has been developing as the northernmost rice-producing area in Japan since water production culture in 1901. It is famous for its mochi-gome, glutinous rice which is used for rice cakes or sake. In addition, Embetsu produces vegetables and milk and ships to all parts of Japan. ■Fishery Blessed with the clear waters of the Sea of Japan and the Embetsu River, fishery has also been thriving. There are various marine products, such as scallops, octopus, salmon and flatfish. We are promoting aquaculture to protect the environment. |

■ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Embetsu is utilizing many forms of ICT. An optical cable network was constructed all over Embetsu and an Information Terminal (TV phone) was introduced into each home. As a result, it is possible to receive notifications from town, and many calls, view photos, etc. ■Exchange In 1989, Embetsu signed a sister city affiliation with Castlegar, British Columbia, Canada. In 1997 the Society of International Exchange of Embetsu and Castlegar was established to promote citizen-oriented exchange. It provides exchange and visit programs for junior high school students. Furthermore, Embetsu engages ALTs (Assistant Language Teachers) and English teaching is tackled eagerly.
